Many of my Napa boot camp members ask me if they should be running on the off days that we are not meeting for a intense boot camp session. The answer I’ll usually tell them is that they’re are a lot more beneficial cardio exercises for fat loss than going on long runs.
Study after study have found that high intensity interval training is the most efficient method of fat loss and it’s far superior when compared to steady state cardio running. They went so far as to say in terms of fat loss the people who were going on long runs where practically wasting their time.
But some of the best cardio exercises really have nothing to do with going on long runs because they’re pretty much exercises that will elevate your heart rate while also increasing your strength. This confuses a lot of my Napa boot camp members but I’m going to explain it in further detail right now.
Take an exercise such as burpees which is a total body resistance exercise using solely bodyweight. Perform one of my best cardio exercises by standing and then immediately dropping down towards the ground. Shoot your feet back until you’re in the push-up position, then do a push-up and shoot your legs back up to the starting position. Finally jump up as high as you can in the air before repeating the exercise again.
After just doing a few repetitions of this top cardio exercise you’ll immediately notice your heart rate increasing exponentially when compared to long steady state cardio runs such as jogging. Below are more of my favorite cardio exercises to burn fat:
- Mountain Climbers
- Push-ups
- Pull-ups
- Jump Squats
- Lunge Hops
- Sprints
- Jumping Rope
- Boxing
